Author(s): Arkajyoti Mukherjee, Achintya Kumar Pal and Utpal Singha Roy*

The present study was undertaken to record the winter bird species diversity from Gandheswari River bank of Bankura District of West Bengal, India with an eye to anthropogenic interventions that have altered the natural habitat to influence the avian diversity. In a modified point count method a total of 105 different bird species were identified from the present study location during the winter months (October – March) of two consecutive years 2011 – 2012 and 2012 – 2013 respectively. Among all the bird species recorded 20 were winter migrants while one was passage migrant and the rest were resident in nature. Anthropogenic interventions were observed to exert an overall negative influence on avian diversity from the present study location.
