Abstract

The research of biomineral formations in a leaf of nettle UrtÃ?Æ?Ã?ca dioica

Author(s): Golokhvast K. S.

The goal of this work is to investigate the localization of biomineral formations in nettle Urtíca dioica leaves. Leaves substantial and visual analysis was performed on the scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive spectrometer. The particles of silicon and gypsum nature, which can be observed visually with scanning electron microscopy, are well represented in nettle leaves. Silicon-containing zones are localized in leaf ribs and most likely they have a structure-strengthening function. Also phytolites are located at the bases of stings. Silicon and other mineral formations right below the surface of the leaf are locate. The physiological function of these inclusions (silicon and gypsum) remains unclear.
