Osteoporosis is the most prevalent metabolic disease of bones, which nowadays has been identified as a public health problem. This study was performed to determine the effect of Health Belief Model in osteoporosis prevention among health volunteers of Khorramabad’s health centers in 2011. This quasi-experimental before and after study was conducted on 100 health volunteers, which were stratified randomly into two fifty-member of case and control groups. Then, in three stages (before intervention, immediately after intervention, and three months after intervention) these groups were evaluated. Data analysis was performed by SPSS software and using repeated measurement test. No significant differences between mean scores of the various structures attributed to this model were observed among two groups before the intervention. The mean scores of the awareness and various structures of this model (perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, and perceived barriers) were increased significantly in the case group after intervention (p<0.05). Regarding performance, the calcium consumption was decreased in both case and control groups. Although HBM is effective for planning some programs to prevent disease or accidents, but ideally, it seems it is not suitable for promotion of behaviors, particularly for changing long-term behavior and behaviors that depend on economic and social factors.
