A series of novel N-[2-(substitutedphenyl)-5-methyl-4-oxo-1,3-thiazolidin-3-yl]benzamides (4a-g) were synthesized and structurally confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR and MS spectral data. Further, the antiviral screening of N-[2-(substitutedphenyl)-5-methyl-4-oxo-1,3-thiazolidin-3-yl]benzamides (4a-g) against a broad panel of DNA and RNA viral strains indicated that N-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-methyl-4-oxo-1,3-thiazolidin-3-yl]benzamide (4a) and N-[5-methyl-2-(2-nitrophenyl)-4-oxo-1,3-thiazolidin-3-yl]benzamide (4e) showed some antiviral activity against feline corona virus (FIPV) (EC50 = 70 ± 15 and 74 ± 31 μM, respectively) and may be selected as lead compound for the development of novel antiviral agents.
