Abstract

Synthesis and characterization of cross linked chitosan-polystyrene polymer blends

Author(s): S. Raghunadh Acharyulu, T. Gomathi and P. N. Sudha

The present study explore the synthesis of chitosan/polystyrene binary blends of different ratios (1:1, 1:2 and 1:3) in the presence of glutaraldehyde as the crosslinking for remediating industrial effluent. The prepared blends were characterized under advanced analytical tools such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction studies (XRD), Thermal analyses (TGA and DSC). The characterization was carried out for the prepared blends to confirm its formation and suitability for adsorption. The result of FTIR confirms the blend formation. TGA and DSC show the thermal stability and compatibility of the blends. From XRD the amorphous nature was confirmed, indicating suitability of the material for adsorption process.
