Abstract

Studies on Otolith Bone of Nile Cichlid (Oreochromis niloticus)

Author(s): Utpal Singha Roy* and Somenath Dey

The present study was undertaken to find whether there existed a positive correlation between total body length and otolith size of Nile cichlid (Oreochromis niloticus) collected from fish market of Durgapur for an entire year. Studies revealed a moderately large size otolith in Oreochromis niloticus ranging between 4.8 – 8.3 mm in size for fish species belonging to size classes of 10 – 20 cm total length. Studies with Nile cichlid also revealed that otolith length was positively correlated (r = 0.97, p <0.05) with total fish body length and could be used effectively to predict the total length of fish species. These findings are important in terms of modern fisheries assessment and their effective management strategies.
