Abstract

Soil quality near a hot mix asphalt (HMA) plant in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria

Author(s): Ilechukwu Ifenna and Leo C. Osuji

Four surface and subsurface soil samples were collected within the vicinity of a hot mix asphalt (HMA) production plant in Igwuruta, Port Harcourt, Nigeria to determine the soil quality. Soil samples were collected at both surface (0 – 15 cm) and subsurface (15 – 30 cm) depths at an increasing distance from the HMA plant while the control samples for both soil depths were collected at 1 km away from the plant. Sampling was carried out in March (dry season) and August (rainy season). The parameters assessed include pH, electrical conductivity (EC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), moisture content, total organic carbon (TOC), total organic matter (TOM), and nitratenitrogen (NO3-N). The results showed poor soil quality characterized by slightly acidic pH, low TOC and NO3-N
