A simple and reproducible UV spectrophotometric method for the quantitative determination of glycyrrhizic acid in crude drug and its herbal formulation were developed and validated in the present work. The parameters linearity, precision, accuracy, limit of detection and limit of quantitation were studied according to International Conference on Harmonization guidelines. Glycyrrhizic acid has the maximum wavelength at 256 nm and hence the UV spectrophotometric method was performed at 256 nm. The samples were prepared in distilled water and the stability of glycyrrhizic acid in aqueous solution at 4 0C and 25 0C was studied. The methods obeys Beer’s Law in concentration ranges employed for evaluation. The content of glycyrrhizic acid in crude drug and herbal formulation was determined. The results of analysis have been validated statistically and recovery studies confirmed the accuracy of the proposed method. Hence the proposed method can be used for the reliable quantitation of glycyrrhizic acid in crude drug and its herbal formulation.
