The physico–chemical characteristics of soils within the vicinity of hot mix asphalt (HMA) production plant in Obigbo, Port Harcourt, Nigeria was evaluated to ascertain the impact of asphalt production on the surrounding soil. Soil samples were collected at both surface (0 – 15 cm) and subsurface (15 – 30 cm) depths at an increasing distance from the HMA plant while the control samples for both soil depths were collected at 1 km away from the plant. Sampling was carried out in March (dry season peak) and August (rainy season peak). The parameters assessed include pH, electrical conductivity (EC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), total organic carbon (TOC), total organic matter (TOM), and nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N). The results revealed poor soil quality characterised by slight acidity, low TOC, NO3-N and CEC. The concentration of the parameters in the dry season samples showed a significant difference (P < 0.05) when compared with the rainy season samples.
