The kinetics of the reduction of trioxoidate (V) ion by 1,4–benzenediol under pseudo-first order condition of an excess 1,4-benzenediol has been investigated in aqueous hydrochloric acid medium. The reaction conforms to a rate law: -d[IO3-] dt =k1K'[IO3-][H2Q][H+] The reaction rate was not affected by change in ionic strength and dielectric constant of the reaction medium. A mechanism consistent with the experimental findings has been proposed.
