The present paper deals with the kinetics of the adsorption of methylene blue from an industrial
effluent onto activated carbon prepared from a cheap source- fruits of Mimusops elengi. The
rate constants for the adsorption of methylene blue dye were determined using Lagergren rate
equation, Intraparticle diffusion rate equation and Elovich rate equation. Commercially
available activated carbon was used for comparative purpose. The results of the study show that
the adsorption process followed first order kinetics and that the economic adsorbent can be
successfully employed in the removal of dyes from effluents. The applicability of the foresaid rate
equations is also well evident.
