Abstract

In vitro antioxidant activity on leaves of Samadera indica

Author(s): Raja Sundararajan and Ravindranadh Koduru

The present study was investigating the antioxidant activity of methanol extract of leaves of Samadera indica. Methanol extract of Samadera indica was tested for in vitro free radical scavenging assays, such as 2, 2-diphenyl-1- picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH), hydroxyl radical, inhibition of superoxide anion radical, scavenging of 2, 2’- azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt radical cation assay (ABTS), lipid peroxidation assay, antioxidant assay by thiocyanate method, total antioxidant activity (phosphomolybdic acid method) and reducing ability. Samadera indica extract effectively scavenged free radicals at all different concentrations and showed its potent antioxidant activity in different models. Further, these effects were in a dose dependent manner. Results were compared to standard antioxidants such as quercetin, vitamin E, curcumin, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), α-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, rutin and Samadera indica enclose strong antioxidant potential.
