Abstract

Equilibrium and kinetic studies of fluoride adsorption by chitin/cellulose composite

Author(s): G. Jayapriya, R. Ramya, Xavier Raja Rathinam and P.N. Sudha

The removal of fluoride from aqueous solution using the chitin/cellulose composite was systematically studied. The adsorption was investigated in batch adsorption system, including both equilibrium and kinetics. Equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Results showed that the adsorption data were found to be well described by Freundlich model. The kinetics of the adsorption process of fluoride on chitin/cellulose composite were also investigated using the Pseudo first order and second order kinetics, results showed that the second order equation provided the best correlation with the experimental results. It was reached that modification of chitin with cellulose increased the possibility of utilization of chitin for fluoride removal from aqueous solution.
