Aspergillus flavus was isolated from maize seeds and screened for aflatoxin production. Effect of crude aflatoxin on germination of maize varieties was studied. Maize seeds were treated with crude aflatoxin filtrate for 5 hours and then grown in pot. The effect was studied in terms of germination, root and shoot length of the seedling and chlorophyll content.Maize seeds were found to be very sensitive to aflatoxin. The germinability of seeds was highly reduced when treated with aflatoxin. Seedling length and total chlorophyll content reduced in aflatoxin treated seeds.
