Microencapsulation may be defined as the process of surrounding or enveloping one substance within another substance on a very small scale, yielding capsules ranging from less than one micron to several hundred microns in size. Drug discovery and delivery to retard the degeneration of joint tissues are challenging. Current treatment of different arthritis involves administration of ideal nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) mainly by oral and parenteral route. Frequent dosing of NSAIDs often leads to patient non compliance. Accounting this problem, drug delivery technologies should be developed which are reduces frequency of dosing along with sustained release of medicament. Among several novel drug delivery systems microencapsulation is one of the novel plot form technology employed to sustain the drug release and reduce or eliminate gastrointestinal irritation, dose intake and ultimately improve the patient compliance in the pharmacotherapy of arthritis, This review reports a comprehensive overview of newly developed microencapsulation technologies as therapeutic targets of arthritis which are may be potentially to reduce adverse side effects induced by NSAIDs.
