Abstract

A review of important medicinal plants native to Iran effective on recovery from peptic ulcer

Author(s): Nahid Jivad and Mahmoud Bahmani

Peptic ulcer is a lesion of gastric mucosa and submucosa or duodenum caused by increased secretion of gastric acid due to alcohol consumption, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, continuous and prolonged hunger, continued stresses, Helicobacter pylori infection, and poor diet. In the present review article, the most important medicinal plants native to Iran that are effective on the recovery from peptic ulcer were identified and presented. The articles were searched for in the databases ISI, PubMed, Scopus, Islamic World Science Citation Center, Magiran, and Google Scholar. The words peptic ulcer, Helicobacter pylori, and ulcer recovery combined with extract, essence, plant, Iran, and traditional medicine were used to search for the relevant articles. The findings indicated that Achillea millefolium, Quercus persica, Melissa officinalis, Thymus vulgaris, Falcaria vulgaris, Anethum graveolens, Carum copticum, Alhagi camelorum, Ziziphora clinopodioides, Brassica oleracea, and Medicago sativa were the most important medicinal plants used to recover from peptic ulcer in Iran. The efficacy of these plants seems to be due to the effective and bioactive substances and antioxidants that cause recovery from peptic ulcer. For the peptic ulcers due to bacteria such as H. pylori, the efficacy of the plants is attributed to the compounds such as thymol and carvacrol with antibacterial property.
