Marine algae also called as seaweeds which are abundantly present in coastal area contain important phytochemical constituents. The present study investigated the presence of phytochemical constituents in Grateloupia lithophila and Centerocerus clavulatum which were collected from Covelong, Tamil Nadu, India with solvents ethanol and benzene. Among these, extracts of Grateloupia lithophila contained phenol, cumarin, tannin, phlobatanin, carboxylic acid, glycoside, cardiac glycoside, saponin and anthrax quinine. Extracts of Centerocerus clavulatum showed the presence of steroid, terpenoids, phenol, glycoside, cardiac glycoside only. More active phytochemical constituents were found in the extracts of Grateloupia lithophila than Centerocerus clavulatum.
