Pharmaceutical care in oncology is a critical component of cancer treatment and management in hospital settings. Given the complexity of cancer therapy and the high risk of medication-related problems, effective pharmaceutical care is essential for optimizing patient outcomes and improving quality of life. This article explores the role of pharmaceutical care in oncology, focusing on medication management for cancer patients in hospitals. It will delve into the various aspects of pharmaceutical care, including medication therapy management, personalized treatment approaches, the role of clinical pharmacists, and strategies for enhancing patient safety and adherence.

Cancer treatment regimens are inherently complex due to the diverse nature of cancer types and the range of therapeutic options available. These drugs target rapidly dividing cancer cells and include classes such as alkylating agents, antimetabolites, and taxanes. These drugs target specific molecules involved in cancer growth, including tyrosine kinase inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies. These agents stimulate the body’s immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells. These drugs block or alter the effects of hormones that fuel certain cancers, such as tamoxifen for breast cancer. These include antiemetics, pain management drugs, and drugs to manage complications like neutropenia and anemia. For example, a patient receiving chemotherapy may experience severe nausea, necessitating an adjustment in antiemetic therapy. Educating patients about their medications, including how to manage side effects and the importance of adherence. This is particularly essential in oncology, where the complexity of treatment can lead to confusion.
