Synthesis, characterization and biological activity of novel imidazoles

N-acetylglycine (1) undergoes facile cyclocondensation with benzaldehydes to gives the
corresponding 4-benzylidene-2-methyloxazol-5-one (2) in good yields. The 4-benzylidene-2-
methyloxazol-5-one (2) condensed with 2-amino substitued benzothiazole (3a-f) afforded 4-
benzylidene-1-(substitued-2-benzo thiazolyl)-2-methyl-1H-imidazol-5(4H)-one (4a-f). The
structures of these compounds were recognized on the basis of analytical and spectral data. All
the newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities.
